January 4th, 1967 dawned bright and warm in San Francisco. It was unusual for that time a year. The clear sky and temperate weather appeared to be a good omen. As the sun chased the last bite of chill from the air Golden Gate Park began to fill up with an unusual group. The “Tribes” were gathering just as it had been advertized. Thousands of stoned and animated youth poured through the Haight Ashbury district and into the area around stage to be greeted by music from the likes of the Quick Silver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. By the end of the day 30,000 people had not only heard the latest in Acid Rock but also listen to preachments of Timothy Leahy, Jerry Ruben, Richard Alpert and Allen Ginsberg to name a few. It was a blending of many philosophies both spiritual and political but it was a milestone marking the emergence of a new era. Even thought the platform was filled with Berkeley Radicals and non-violent spiritual gurus the theme, clearly echo in topic ranging from consciousness expansion to women’s rights was prophetic in nature.

I can still remember that day. I had wandered into the park about halfway through the event. I was struck by a couple of things: One was the intensity of the music. I can still hear the Quick Silver Messenger Service hammering out one of their regular numbers: Pride of Man. The lyrics had an overriding message that blended anti-war sentiments with clear spiritual and biblical themes. It was a sort of prophesy put to music.

Thou that dwell on many water rich in treasure wide in fame
Bow unto a God of gold thy pride of might shall be thy shame
Oh God the pride of man broken in the dust again

And only God can lead the people back into the faith again
Thy holy mountain be restored thy mercy on thy people lord

Here you had Rock Music that was not only pushing out into a sphere of the mystical through the synthesis of psychedelic and occultism but it was warning of a frightening future. This rock band found themselves in the role of musical sages riding out like horseman on to a cosmic prairie with an apocalyptic message for America and world. This generation would not be like their fathers or their forefathers. They would bring their jeremiad in a way that no pulpit in America could bring it. The song, a cover written by Hamilton Camp, a song writer and folkie was just one of many from the early 60’s that used folk music as commentary and a hammer of righteousness against the materialism and warmongering of the “military industrial complex. The lyrics had this unusual prediction.

Shout a warning to the nations that the sword of God is raised
On Babylon that mighty city rich in treasure wide in fame
It shall cause thy towers to fall and make it be a pyre of flame

In light of 9/11 the above lyrics have a prophetic overtone. And in a sense so did the Human Be In. This "Gathering of the Tribes for a Human in," was a sentinel to millions of youth world wide. It was the forerunner of the huge “Summer of Love” that drew major media attention and put the whole hippie scene on the map. This youth movement that was being formed out of the womb of Haight Ashbury and Greenwich Village was generations old. The hippie’s fascination with spiritual and cosmic thought was only a birthing of movement that had been carried to this continent in embryonic form years before by European bohemian culture and then been nurtured by beatnik musings until it came to full gestation. At the heart of all of these movements was a connection with supernatural.

Fascination with higher realms was a big part of the “beatnik’ era that had proceeded the days of Haight Ashbury. Zen Buddism and other eastern thought found fertile ground with many. But another elixir had been gaining in popularity: psycho-active drugs. They would become a sort of ethereal “Eucharist” at this tribal meeting.

Introduction

My name is Bob Maddux and I’m a biblical supernaturalist. I’m not sure if that’s an actual catagory but I’ve coined it to fit this new Blog. Let me explain. All too often those who explore the realm of the supernatural get lost in scary and weird places where they experience a reality beyond this world but have no safe guidelines for getting around in it. As a result they end up confused, possessed, deceived or all three. When you bring up the bible with many people they immediately picture some anemic, narrow world view that makes excuses for the Church's current lack of supernatural manifestations or label anyone who believes that such things can happen as inspired by the devil or deluded. This is sad because not only does the Bible record some of the most amazing displays of supernatural power but it also gives us a road map on how to operate safely in this realm. Yes, there are dangers in the supernatural, and yes many people, even sincere seekers can get lost there but there is also a wonderful and biblically guided way to journey in this realm. Hopefully these pages will help you in your quest for answers.
